The Social Media Irony

Here’s something curious: Social media platforms don’t want AI bots posting and commenting. Yet they nudge humans toward bot-like behaviour.

How? Continually changing algorithms. Constant pressure to post. Engagement that rewards formulaic patterns. Distribution that disappears if you don’t optimize. So humans learn to act like bots—posting at the right times, crafting for reactions, following the patterns. All to earn visibility on platforms that ban actual bots.

Why does this happen? When both serve the same purpose. More content. More engagement. More ad revenue.

Why are bots not allowed?

Because there is a difference between engagement and believable engagement.

Fake engagement kills advertiser trust. Bots distort the algorithm. User experience deteriorates. Legal pressure mounts.

Here is the kicker though: One of the 2 is going to be true. Humans acting like bots will end up causing the same equilibrium disruption that the platforms fear, or bots become as good at creating believable engagement and hence the whole ban becomes pointless.
